Crisis Intervention
The SMWC Student Counseling & Wellness Center provides appropriate crisis intervention services to campus in a variety of ways. In addition to clinical support, consultations and trainings are always available through our office.
- 24/7 crisis support through Timely Care
- When faced with students in distress or crisis, the SMWC Student Counseling & Wellness Center recommends the following steps:
- See Something – notice the behaviors or appearance that has caused you to develop concern for the student in question.
- Say Something – if safe for you to do so, ask the student how they are and if they need support or resources
- Do Something – ensure that a student accesses the help they need, which may include: contacting public safety or 911 if the student is a risk to themselves or others, walking the student to the SCWC and waiting with them for the next available clinician, helping the student access TimelyCare in a confidential location or following up with an early alert or consultation with a member of the SCWC staff.
- If assisting a student in crisis but not a risk to themselves or others, it is critically important that you assist them in accessing crisis support either by walking them to the Student Counseling & Wellness Center and waiting for the next available staff member or assisting the student in accessing crisis support through TimelyCare. If assisting a student after hours when Student Counseling Center staff are not available, assist the student in accessing TimelyCare’s crisis support or help them to connect with 988 (Crisis Support Hotline).
- It is important to remember that if a student appears to be a danger to themselves or others, emergency services must be contacted first.
